10.05 The Sound The Speed The Light Release and "1,2,3 Partyy!" Premiere

The day has almost arrived. The long-anticipated new album, The Sound The Speed The Light, will be released tomorrow, October 6th.

Roger had this to say about the release:

“It's been a calm and uneventful journey, this Sound Speed Light album. (definition of ‘album’: a collection of recordings, on long-playing record, cassette, or compact disc, that are issued as a single item). We worked long and hard coming up with the running order, then yesterday played the order backwards at the show at MIT, and it sounded just as good backwards as forwards.

As odd as this may sound, we really do hope you like the disc.”

Also premiering tomorrow is the video for “1,2,3,Partyy!” exclusively on Pitchfork.

BEST MUSIC POLL > BOSTON

Best Singer-songwriter in Boston

Mike Fiore, Faces on Film

Over the past year, Mike Fiore, the man behind Faces on Film (which half the time is just Fiore on stage anyway), has been giving his songs a little something extra. Maybe it's the delicate touches - thorny chords tucked in between lines, or the rolling, breath-like tempo of his ballads. Maybe it's his revival-tent revelations, which issue over tambourine and seething organ rave-ups. Or perhaps it's just his voice, a pure, reedy, revved-up instrument that projects like the beam of a searchlight across dark clubs, sparkling river banks, and every other venue in which we've seen him this past year. The Troubles (self-released) showcased every indie-rock trick in the book and then some; Fiore nails the dusty acoustic approach, washed-out psychedelic flare-ups, and scrappy, waltzing sing-alongs with ease. And anyone who can wring actual catharsis out of a McSweeney's line like "the medical mind isn't one that exists" deserves some kind of a medal, right?

07.13 New Mission of Burma album announcement and "1, 2, 3 Partyy!" Download
On October 6, Matador will be releasing Mission Of Burma’s fourth studio LP, The Sound The Speed The Light.

More from the Matablog below:

Recorded in Boston with Bob Weston at the controls, the record is a departure from the pinned-needles roar of 2006’s The Obliterati. The new album sounds far more spacious and dynamic. It is more or less divided into 4 sets or suites of songs. Each suite explores a set of moods or colors, across the usual dizzying array of lyrical topics, from alcoholism to fleshly concerns. The anthemic, catchy opener, our first MP3, is a classic Burma rocker on a level with “This Is Not A Photograph” or “That’s How I Escaped My Certain Fate.” Other tracks, such as “Feed,” “Forget Yourself,” and “Slow Faucet,” the latter a live favorite for some time, are slow, hypnotic builders. “Good Cheer” is a burst of almost uncontainable joy and fun that literally explodes from the speakers.

Of course, all the Burma trademarks are also present: the military snare drum, the melodic basslines high up on the neck, and the furiously experimental guitarwork, refracted and changed back into the songs via tape loops – all punctuated by the hoarse shouts of drummer Peter Prescott. This controlled chaos, this disciplined letting go, is the heart of what they do and it remains as exhilarating and fulfilling as ever. 6 weeks before the album, on August 18, we will be releasing a pre-album 7″ containing two non-LP tracks: “Innermost” and “Here It Comes.”
