Leonardo Da Vinci is famously credited with the quote "An artist's work is never finished, only abandoned." One might wonder if Rochester, New York's JOYWAVE had this in mind when they decided to revisit their debut EP, Koda Vista for their upcoming 88888 mixtape. Whereas 88888's predecessor 77777 prominently featured samples of other artists' work (such as LCD Soundsystem and Pet Shop Boys), this most recent effort relies on 100% original work and samples from Koda Vista.

88888 is a prime example of creating something anew through defacing an original art piece. One would imagine this is an artistic vein the band enjoys, as it shows up commonly in their work. For 88888's artwork, they've featured the work of seminal expressionist artist Edvard Munch (best known for his painting "The Scream"). Munch was famously obsessed creatively with ensuring the best possible version of his work was presented to the public. He revisited "The Scream" four times resulting in 4 very distinct versions of the painting. JOYWAVE is doing something similar with Koda Vista through this mixtape in that it takes pieces of the EP and reworks them with the goal of presenting the project in its best form. The band took a similar approach for their 77777 project where they put their own spin on an other artist's music and art.

JOYWAVE frontman Daniel Armbruster is the primary force behind the project creatively. However the onstage synergy between Armbruster and his 4 bandmates is an integral part of what makes the band so special. They released their debut mixtape, 77777 in March of 2011, with their first proper EP, Koda Vista following a year later. In January, the band released a concert film, "Joywave Live at the Planetarium", which you can now view. Look for 88888 to be available from the band's website soon.
